To kick off our new blog series, “Graduate Spotlight”, where we take a look into the lives of our Engineering Graduates, we’ll be speaking to Melbourne-raised Aaron Gmehling. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from RMIT, Aaron joined the team in NJM in 2021, and has been steadily growing his skills and exposure to different sectors ever since. We sat down with Aaron to reflect on his experience so far, inside and outside of work.
What made you decide to become an Engineer?
“As a logical thinker with a keen interest in problem-solving, I found engineering to be a natural fit for me. The field’s focus on using science and mathematics to design and develop solutions to real-world challenges appealed to my analytical nature and I was eager to explore its many facets.”
Why Electrical Engineering?
“Electrical Engineering, in particular, captured my curiosity, and I was excited to delve deeper into the field and learn more about its principals and applications. Ultimately, I became and electrical engineer because I saw it as a way to use my skills and passions to make a positive impact on the world around me.”
What have you enjoyed most about your time at NJM so far?
“In addition to the technical aspects of my job, I have also appreciated the social activities and friendships that I have formed at NJM. The company encourages a friendly and collaborative work environment which has made it easy for me to build relationships with my colleagues and feel like a valued member of the team.”
What is the highlight of your time so far?
“One aspect of my job which has been particularly rewarding is the opportunity to take on more responsibility and challenge myself professionally. NJM have been supportive of my growth, and I have been given the chance to work on increasingly complex projects that have helped me to broaden my skillset and take my career to the next level.”
What do you like to do outside of work?
“Outside of work, I have a few hobbies that keep me busy and help me to unwind. One of my main interests is working on my 1976 VW Kombi, which I find to be a rewarding and challenging pastime. Despite its age, the vehicle is still in good shape, but it requires frequent maintenance and repairs, which I enjoy doing myself. It’s a great way for me to learn new skills and stay busy, and I find it satisfying to be able to fix things and keep the vehicle running smoothly.”
“Another hobby that I enjoy is spending time outdoors and getting back to nature. Hiking, camping and exploring new areas helps me to relax and clear my mind.”
